Root Beer Taste Test

July 16, 2011

Sean decided we should have a root beer taste test (and who am I to argue?), so we got and chilled the necessary supplies, and conducted SCIENCE!

I marked four cups on the bottom with #s 1-4 (corresponding alphabetically to the four names of RB), poured, and then had Sean come and mix them up while I wasn’t looking, and mark them randomly with A-D.  Here are the results:

  • Barq’s – “it tastes like it has Dr Pepper mixed in”, “Not Fond of it”, “I bet this is Barq’s.”  This was my daughter’s favorite, the least favorite for the rest of us.
  • St Arnold – “Watery”, “superficial”, “a bit sweet”, and “vanilla-y”.  This was the third least favorite.
  • A&W – “Sweeter…too sweet”, “More root beeriness”. This was a close second place.
  • IBC – “Richer”, “sweeter”, “has a sharpness”.  This was the general favorite.

I should not it wasn’t an ENTIRELY even contest, because only IBC and St Arnold were in glass bottles. The other two were in plastic.  But I suspect the results wouldn’t have been much different.

What about Mug?? That’s my favorite, with A&W a close 2nd. IBC tends to be too molassess-y for my taste…

The store didn’t have Mug. We’re going to have the Root Beer Challenge Round 2 at some point (and Round 3, if there are enough contenders).
