Brave Boys

August 1, 2011

We went for a brief playtime at a McDonald’s playplace – one of the few comfortable out-of-the-house spots where the kids can play – and I sat and watched my boys play.

Then came the siren of a three year old in terror.  MY three year old.

Ben was stuck in the very center of a high-up tunnel made of stitched canvas strips. The space between the netting and the long drop was suddenly, unexpectedly more than be could take. So he freaked.

Eric sat at the end of the tunnel.  Between the two of us (Eric beside and I below), we managed to coax Ben out of the thing, and he recovered quickly.  As they crawled off to play, I heard big brother encouraging…”You did it! Are you SO PROUD?”

It happened again the same way a few minutes later. And a few minutes after that, he was in he middle of the net again. But he had gained enough confidence not to freak out, and he let Eric lead him out.

My boys…they have kind and courageous hearts.

The bigger one is definitely good that way. He’s so good with benny at times… they fight, but when the chips are down like that, he does it alright…

That’s so sweet! Those are definitely the moments to treasure (and try to keep in mind when they are fighting to the point of driving you crazy)!!
