Delight

December 9, 2011

Last night Benny asked me for chocolate milk, and then for a present. He is (1) at the age where his primary occupation is asking for things, and (2) quite smitten, after his weekend birthday party and his Wednesday night extended family birthday party, with receiving gifts.  So I made his chocolate milk (with lid), and slipped it in a gift bag that was sitting on my desk.

He was immensely pleased.  He smiled all over his little face, and with his eyes, and all the way down to his toes.

Thus commenced an absolutely gorgeous, extended game of Random Stuff Gifting, first with Lisette and Eric picking out random stuff for Ben (the roll of toilet paper was hilarious. The pair of underwear with a dirty sock was absofuckinglutely hysterical), then the boys gifting Lisette, then all three gifting things for me and for Daddy.

Around round 17, it became tiresome for the elder children (things NEVER get old to four-year-olds), and they stopped. But it was a beautiful 30 minutes or so, when they all played together and delighted in surprising one and another of us with trivialities (my favorite was the duct tape, single work glove, paintbrush, and booklet combo).  Eric used to play that game with us when he was younger, and we with Lisette when she was younger still.

Enchanting.
